Amaranth Fat Spikes                  

Annual. Strange flowers made up of fluffy balls placed on side of each other. Huge, very long spikes (+ 75 cm) that can get quite heavy after rains. Tall, 2 m plant that needs a support. Amaranth Love-lies-Bleeding     
(Amaranthus caudatus)         

Annual. Long dangling spikes of a purplish red color. They can reach more than 30 cm long and touch the ground. Nice cut flower. Medium size plants, between 70 and 120 cm high. Sow in groups or alone. Easy to grow. Reseeds itself. Blooms from July until frosts. Full sun to part shade.

Amaranth Red Sea         (Amaranthus tricolor)      

Ornamental and edible type mainly grown for its beautiful magenta-red leaves. The leaves are prepared by slightly cooking them, like spinach. Used in oriental cuisine. Can also be used just as an ornamental. Does not produce a main seed head, like grain amaranth. Maximum height is about 1,2 m.

Amaranth Velvet Curtain        (Amaranthus cruentus)

Artemisia annua       (Sweet Annie)        

Plant used for centuries in traditional chinese medicine. Contains artemisin, a molecule used to treat malaria. Leaves can be harvested to make fall decorations, wreaths and swags. They keep their color and fragrance even dried. They have a nice, sweet and piney scent, similar to camphor. To make tea, harvest leaves before plants start blooming. This species from China grew very well here (and probably in zones 3 and 4). You can start harvesting leaves in August. Tall plant, can reach 2 m high. Full sun to part shade. Same family as wormwood and tarragon. Seeds are super tiny, so handle carefully. Aka Sweet Annie.

 Asarina Purple               

Annual. Delicate climber with small purple flowers, about 2 to 3 cm long. Good for hanging baskets or pots. Attracts hummingbirds. Flowers look a bit like snapdragons. Starts blooming around 4 months after sowing. Full sun to part shade.

Butterfly Weed    (Asclepisa tuberosa)

Perennial. Monarchs and other butterflies come visit regularly the flowers of the Butterfly Weed to feed on their abundant nectar. The small, 1 cm orange flowers grow in dense clusters and bloom for a long time. May take more than one year to get fully established, but once there it will bloom freely and heavily every year from June to September. Deep, well drained soil. Height: 45-60 cm.   Balsam             Impatiens balsamina

Annual. Fast and profuse bloomer that can be sown outside. Mix of pinks and fuchsias. Click thumbnails for details. This flower is in the impatiens family and its seed pods will explode upon touch. Annual. Bushy plant covered with beautiful bluish-purple flowers. Slightly scented. Plant is about 1 m high by l m large. Blooms from July until sept/oct. Small flowers, about 1,8 cm long (3/4 inch), reminiscent of myosotis, produced in abundance all over a well branched plant. Full sun to part shade. Surface sow (dot not cover seeds). Aka Jamaican Forget-Me-Not, Amethyst Flower or Bush Violet.

Creeping Bellflower       (Campanule Fausse-Raiponce)           ( Campanula rapunculoides )

Perennial. Campanula with little blue flowers. Blooms for July until September. Its root is edible and has a nice sweet and nutty taste. Aggressive growth. Grows wild in many places. Perennial up to zone 3. Full sun to part shade. Height: 1,2 m. The longest stems tend to fall towards the ground, thus the common name. Can become invasive with its root system. Make sure to grow it in a contained area.

Chrysanthemum Painted Daisy mix    (Chrysanthemum carinatum)


Annual. Colorful mix of red, orange, yellow, white and purple, many with contrasting concentric circles. Daisy-like flowers, 2 to 3 inches wide. Height: 60 cm. Finely cut foliage. An old favorite that can tolerate some neglect. Nice cut flower.

Chenopodium Purple Goosefoot, Tree Spinach   (Chenopodium giganteum)          

Annual. Young shoots from this variety are covered with a fine iridescent magenta powder. (Click on photos). The young leaves and shoots are sweet and tender. They can be harvested and used in salads. Trim the plant regularly to keep it manageable. Otherwise, this plant will reach more than 2 m. Young seedlings already show the nice magenta coloring. The mature plant tends to loose its colors in late August and September. You can then cut it back or completely remove it. You can also let it finish its cycle: the seeds are very much appreciated by the birds.

African Foxglove          Ceratotheca triloba

Hibiscus Sabdariffa        (Roselle, Jamaica)
(Hibiscus sabdariffa, var.
sabdariffa ruber)

Hibiscus variety grown in the tropical regions for its edible flower calyces. Can be used to prepare juice, syrups and other beverages. The steeped dried calyces add a nice red color to drinks and a pleasant fruity-tart flavor reminiscent of cranberries. It is important to note that this species is day length sensitive, so it will only start to bloom when the days get short, usually after october. So if you leave in Canada or in the northern US, move the pots inside in the fall if you ever want to get a chance to get it to bloom. Otherwise, grow it outside only for its nice red-veined foliage and stems. Height: 2-3 m. Pale yellow or pink flowers, about 8 to 10 cm wide. Tender perennial. Easy germination. Full sun.

Hops   (Humulus lupulus)


Perennial. Climbing ornamental used to cover trellises, fences and walls. Divided leaves somewhat similar to those of grapevines. Hops flowers are used to flavor beer and give it its bitterness. Vigorous, fast growing plant that can reach more than 6 meters in one season. Needs a lot of space to grow and a good soil. Sun, part shade. Only female plants produce the hop flowers. Zone 4. Seeds need cold treatment: sow, water and place trays in the fridge for 1-2 months, then put under light and room temperature.
